Fun and Interesting Facts about Scottdale, AZ

The Name of Scottsdale Before Scottsdale

The most popular of the fun facts about Scottsdale is its name. Have you heard that Scottsdale wasn’t always known by that name? This place reportedly used to be known as Orangedale. In a recent post for The Arizona Republic, Paul Messinger revealed that the neighborhood was formerly called “Orangedale” because of Albert G. Utley, a former Rhode Island banker who owned 640 acres of land roughly where Indian School and Scottsdale Roads are now. In

In 1894, he designated a portion of the land as the site of a new town he named “Orangedale” because of the area’s suitability for citrus farming. Utley frequently steered people to his farm by suggesting that it was near Winfield Scott’s property, where citrus groves were located. According to Messinger, the name “Scottsdale” was accidentally given to his new city in a newspaper story.

The Scottsdale Airport

A lot of things at Scottsdale Airport have altered since WWII. It was during WWII when planning for what is now Scottsdale Airport began. Northern Scottsdale is home to Thunderbird II Airfield, which first opened for military flight training in 1942. Before the conclusion of WWII, the airfield had trained almost 5,000 pilots. To the south of Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and to the west of Hayden Road is Scottsdale Airport, now a component of the Scottsdale Airpark region, which is a major commercial and industrial center for the Valley.

The Titus House is the Oldest House in Scottsdale

If you’re in the mood for something a little more off the beaten path, Scottsdale has a few historic sites that are worth checking out. When it comes to Scottsdale homes, the Titus House is the oldest one that’s still standing. The rich San Francisco railroad investor Frank Titus inspired the original 1892 construction of the Titus House. For its historical significance, it has been included in the National Register. The first permanent structure in Scottsdale, this Victorian-style home was once bordered by a citrus farm.

The Titus House is a private residence today, but you can still stop by to see some of its original architecture—the front door still bears the original decorative ironwork from when it was first built.

Not your standard colored firetrucks

The Scottsdale Fire Department has decided to put a bit of a spin on its fire trucks. Instead of the standard bright red fire trucks, the vehicles in this city are chartreuse, which is often described as yellow-green. The color choice is backed by science, according to researchers.

Stephen Solomon, OD, a licensed optometrist, and veteran volunteer firefighter, followed up research from 1955, that found lime-yellow was actually easier to spot at night and in low lighting than other colors, including red. Color aside, the Scottsdale Fire Department says it’s not just another alternative look for its vehicles. The department says they want to be able to be seen at night and in low lighting—and who can argue with the science?
